Our Late Summer Wednesday Kickball league wrapped up last week with an eagerly anticipated showdown between the Downtown divisions top 4 teams. All 4 teams were tightly bunched in the standings and no clear cut favorite had emerged entering play.
Our first semi-final started off strong for the #1 seed "Friendship to Friendship" in the first inning. Jon had a great bunt as lead off hitter and Oliver had a great kick that scored 2 runs. The #4 seed "All My Pitches" didn't hand their heads however. Thanks to some very aggressive running by Leo, All My Pitches were able to score a run in the first inning. The score was 3 to 1 going into the third when Martin, playing injured, had a big kick and got on base. He was then able to out run the throw going from second to home off of an error in the outfield putting Team Friendship up 4 to 1. All My Pitches were on the verge of scoring more runs but were stopped by excellent defense by Team Friendship, especially by Paige who caught more than five balls in the field. The game ended 6 to 1 in favor of Team Friendship.
In our second semi-final the #3 seed "Free Ballers" put the kickball world on notice that they are a team to be reckoned with when they dismantled past champions the "Faulty Rubbers" by a score of 8-0.
The championship match was a hotly contested and evenly matched affair. Free Ballers entered the game with a small psychological advantage having defeated their opponent in their regular season game. In a game in which runs were at a premium and stout defense was on display throughout a single run proved to be the difference between these two kickball juggernauts. Free Ballers seized the moment and captured the championship by a score of 3-2.
Congratulations to Free Ballers and to all of the teams that competed in a great Kickball season.
