Frequently Asked Questions

1. How old do you have to be to play?

Because we are focused towards young professionals and bar specials most of our members are between 21-40.
However, if you're physically able to play and are at least 21 we would be happy to have you join us!

 

2. What is the deadline to register for leagues?


All of our leagues are first come, first serve. We have an early bird deadline so all teams can receive a price break if they sign up by that certain date. We highly recommend signing up as early as possible as many leagues sell out before the early bird deadline.
In general, registration ends two weeks prior to the league start date. This allows us time to finish placement and scheduling issues and gives our shirt company enough time to have your team shirts ready at the start of the season.

 

3. I just moved here and I don't know anyone, can I still sign up?

Of course! We offer the ability to register as an individual, a small group, or a full team. Signing up as a team saves you money, but many of our members sign up as individuals (Indys) and are placed on teams.

 

4. What is an Individual or "Indy" sign up?

Basically it means that you don’t have a team to play with, but still want to play a sport. You sign up by yourself and we do our best to place you on what we call "Indy Teams" with other people that have signed up singly or in small groups. So, day one everyone is in the same boat. Many of our past individual teams stick together season after season, so it's often a good way to meet some new friends.


5. If I sign up as an "Indy" or part of an "Indy Group", am I guaranteed a spot in the league?
We will do everything in our power to assign all individuals to a team before the start of each season. However, sometimes it isn't possible. We may not have enough of one gender to complete an additional "Indy" team.  The best way to ensure you're placed on a team is to sign up with someone of the opposite gender and sign up early and not at the last second.  If we are unable to place you or your small group onto a team, we will issue you a credit for a future season or issue you a full refund.

6. I want to play, but only if I can be on the same team as my friend.  How can I do that?
During registration, you can create an Indy Group and invite friends to join your group.  Or you can each write each others names down as a request to play with each other. We have a very high success rate and fulfilling requests, unless the requests are mutually exclusive, it's a large group of one gender, or you're all signing up at the very last second.  

7. Can you hold me a spot or can I put down a deposit?
Team captains may make a deposit on a league and reserve their team a spot. After the deposit has been secured the captain may send payment requests to teammates and/or have the balance automatically charged to his or her credit card on the payment deadline. Remember, the captain is always responsible for payment of the full league fee.  If you wish to pay your team fee in full at the time of registration then you still must pay the pre-set deposit amount then return to your personal player page and pay the remainder owed for your team. Any outstanding balance not paid by your teammates will be your responsibility to pay. We'll save your team spot and may turn away other teams by doing so. We will not be able to add free agents to your team to help cover the cost.


8. Are there team practices?
Some teams choose to get together to practice, but those are the minority. We do not schedule practices or provide facilities/equipment for practices, but teams are welcome to arrange their own!

 

9. Do I need to be athletic to play?
This is a coed recreational league designed to meet people and have fun! No athletic ability required, just try your best!

 

10. I will miss a couple games during the season. Is that ok?
Of course! We realize that things come up and sports aren't always at the top of your priority list. We account for occasional absences in our roster size so that there's nothing to worry about for your team. Make sure to RSVP to your team or team captain and let them know you won't be at your game!


11. How much does it cost?
It depends on the sport or activity. Some sports cost more than others due to field reservations, permits, insurance costs, taxes, equipment, and any extra costs. League fees are roughly $40-80 per person when signing up as an individual depending on the sport. Team fees vary by sport and can save you money per person.

 

12. Can I sign up and play on an existing team, but not an Indy team?
We don’t place players on established teams or maintain a “Free Agent” list.

 

13. 
What if I really like my teammates, can I keep them?
Of course….you can always sign up for another season as a full team after your initial Indy team.

 

14. When will I receive a schedule?
You will receive an email about one week before the start of the league. If a league sells out well in advance you may get your schedule early or if we're still waiting on teams for your league, you may get your schedule a little under a week ahead of time. If we don't have a schedule ready by 5 days before the beginning of your league, we'll let you know.
 

15. Why are there so many people on my Indy team?
We try to put extra people on your team as we realize that people can’t make it every week. We have no way of knowing how many players will have perfect attendance when we form rosters, and we've found that usually 2-5 people on a team miss each week. It's more fun to make a few extra friends than lose every game because you're shorthanded

 

16. What time will our games be each week?
When signing up for a league, you will play a mix of game times listed. For instance, if the league listing says game times are 6:30 to 9:30, you will get a mix of 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 game times throughout the season and playoffs.

17. When will we receive our t-shirts and VIP cards?
You will receive your shirts and VIP cards at your first game.

 

18. Can we change our team name?
Of course, just let us know.

19. What is your refund policy?
Generally speaking, there are no refunds for any reason, including (but not limited to) illness, injury, relocation, etc.  If for any reason we can't run a league you signed up for, you'll be refunded in full.

20. How do I find out if my games are cancelled due to bad weather?
Come to our website, there will be a big update on each page as soon as games are canceled or postponed. Please do not call our office for information on game status. As soon as we know, we update the website.


For weekday games we usually won't decide to play or cancel until 4:00pm to allow crews to work on the field or for a storm to pass. If weather affects game play after the first game starts, the website will be updated as necessary. If at any point there is no notification on the website or you have not received an email that games are canceled, then games are still on.

 

21. If there is a rainout, how is it handled on the schedule?
If a whole day's games are cancelled, that whole day's schedule will be rescheduled for the last week of the season before playoffs. Partial rainouts are handled on a case by case basis.

 

22. What do I get when my team dominates your league?
Depending on your attitude... angry looks from the other players, and very few friends! We do give out some small prize to the championship team, but it's hardly worth everyone else in the league thinking you're a jerk. So relax, make some new friends, and have fun.

 

23. Our team isn’t good, but my friend is really good, can I bring him along and let him play to make us better?
No. If your team will be short your friend can register as a sub for the game through our website, but just bringing your buddy with you to play isn’t fair to the rest of the team. You’re taking away playing time from people who paid to play.

 

24. Can I be a substitute/part-time player? (Can my team find a sub for me?)
We now offer the option for a team to use a substitute player, but only if the team is shorthanded and has less than their normal roster size. For six years we have not allowed subs, and our rules are designed so that you can play short without forfeiting in most cases. We also believe it's not fair to have subs play free or pay less than our league players. If your team would like to use a sub anyway, see below:

  • Substitute players are permitted to participate in 1 game/match by registering online by 5pm on game day.
  • To register as a one-time sub, accept the waiver terms and pay $10/game fee.
  • Subs are required to check-in with a Head Referee or League Supervisor prior to playing.
  • You must wear your own shirt close to the team color. Do not wear a Xoso shirt.
  • Teams using subs cannot exceed the number of players on their original roster.
  • Players may not sub more than 2 games per season. Each time will require a separate $10 game fee. (Please contact us if this is your second time as a sub. The system will only allow you to register once as a sub.)
  • Subs are prohibited during the final week of the season and from playoff games.

 

We are fully aware that things come up and not everyone can play each week. The size of our team rosters take this fact into account and our rules for each sport also enable a team to play shorthanded (to a point) without needing to forfeit.


25. Our team has an injured player, can we replace him/her?
Injured players may be permanently replaced at no charge prior to the 5th week of the season under the following regulations:

  • The captain and/or injured player must notify the league immediately.
  • The replacement player must be added to the roster by Xoso and accept the online waiver before being eligible to play.
  • The replacement player is a PERMANENT replacement. The injured player may not return until the following season.
  • Any payment issues and money exchange must be determined between the injured player and the replacement player.
  • The injured player must give their Xoso team shirt to the replacement player to wear during games. If the shirt doesn't fit, the replacement player may purchase a new shirt (if available) for $15.


Bonus. How do you say or pronounce Xoso?
It's pronounced Zo-so, like the Led Zeppelin album. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to spell out the letters, but if that's what it takes to spread the word, it's fine by us!
It also has nothing to do with Led Zeppelin, although they were a fantastic band. It comes from Xs and Os from a playbook diagram.
