Congratulations to “Plant the Spike” on their journey to the championship! “Plant the Spike” entered the playoffs as a wildcard team as the fourth seed. When interviewing one of the players before the game, they said, “I know we have our work cut out for us, but we have to manifest a 3 match victory tonight.” Needless to say, their spirits were high. Their positivity showed in the first game versus “Plan B” who was the other at-large team in the playoffs. “Plant the Spike” made short work of “Plan B” in two games winning 21-14 and 21-8 respectively and making it to the next round.
“Plant the Spikes” were met by their toughest opponents yet, the number 1 seed “Good Volleybrations” who beat them earlier in the season, so they knew it was going to be a challenge. “Good Volleybrations” seemed to give them no trouble in the first game, but in the exciting second game, “Plant the Spike” and “Good Volleybrations” played an extremely close third game foreshadowing the finals to come.“Bing Bong” came into the playoffs touting the second best record and the number two seed. They faced “Notorious DIG” who seemed to give them some trouble at first, but they made quick work of them after two dominant performances with 21-12 and 21-8 victories.
The finals were set: “Bing Bong and Plant the Spike”. In the first game, “Plant the Spike” took a commanding 8-point lead and things looked to get out of hand for “Bing Bong”, but they took a timeout, regrouped, and went on an improbable 11-0 run to take the lead and the first game 21-17. All in attendance knew they were witnessing a match of attrition. In the second game, it was back and forth all game until “Plant the Spike” went on a 5-0 run of their own and took the second game 21-18. It all came down to the final game, this is where Xoso legends are born. In the third game, nobody was letting up, players were diving, sliding, and flying all over the court not allowing the ball to touch the ground. The game was a tug of war between two Goliaths. It was all tied 20-20 and “Plant the Spike” took the final two points on impressive spikes and hoisted their first banner being the improbable Wildcard Champion cementing their legacy in the record books. Once again, congratulations on winning the Monday Beginner Indoor Volleyball league!
